Skyrim Crashes When Entering Cities - posted in Skyrim Technical Support: So I recently reinstalled Skyrim because I missed it a lot. That's still a lot of mods that alter cities. The only place in SSE I had FPS issues was Whiterun, but I'm pretty sure that's from using Verdant without Landscape Fixes. Yea I only used it when I first started modding Skyrim. Anyone feel me here or am I just stoopid (Free bobby)? However, the price of that is that any mod that modifies those cities has to be patched in order to work. It's also not hard to patch most mods yourself, with a script to do most of the heavy lifting. I use it for almost every playthrough I do now (when I play a mage I tend to use a levitation spell, and Open Cities is beautiful for that). [–]ArthmoorDestroyer of Bugs 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago (4 children). What are some of your other mods? I seem to recall reading IC having navmesh issues with Open Cities amongst other mods. Directly connection actions that happen outside and inside. I read it more as 'go ahead, even though LOOT says they're incompatible, I use them together and it generally works'. It removes the loading points on doors between cities, giving a more immersive feeling to the game as you can actually pass through the gates into the city interior. With Open Cities, however, you don't get that little convenience, so what you're actually doing is dragging an extremely troublesome enemy into a populated area filled with non-essential NPCs. Everyone loves it but not everyone uses it. I don't use Open Cities either. Everytime i enter my save game it crashes in a few seconds. That's the point I'm trying to get across. Open Cities Skyrim - Special Edition ===== Open Cities Skyrim is a comprehensive project that aims to bring back at least part of the feel of Morrowind - specifically how most of the cities were a natural part of the world and you could just walk in without loading screens. The concept is obviously good, but for compatibility reasons it can only be used in the lightest load orders. Open Cities Skyrim is a mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition created by Arthmoor. If I think the problem is too jarring, I have a navmesh edit patch at the end of my load order that I use to manually correct the conflict. I don't like it. For any of you who use Open Cities in a large and “stable” load order, would you mind posting it? Heavily modded game, not so much. I get a freeze and crash entering whiterun or entering a building inside of whiterun or leaving a building inside of white run. Stuff on the outside is generally already compatible unless it needs navmesh edits or something. Light load order/modding, it's a good mod. I love it. As for the latter statement, I'm well aware of how people tend to overstate that but it still comes at a small cost as far as I remember from my few playthroughs with it. It seemed to work well enough but I was working with a small, one building mod). For instance, Guards chasing after you and your along the City Walls? The alpha is to check to any so they can be fixed. Never used it since. Had about 100 mods, upgraded the meshes and textures while keeping a vanilla base. [–]Booper3 73 points74 points75 points 2 years ago (4 children), Open cities is a no go for me. I guess that's dismissive from one point of view. For me personally it's definitely not worth the compatibility issues though. Needs a compatibility patch for everything under the sun and it's an unnecessary FPS and stability hit. Open Cities is a highly stable mod. Fix the damn gates! End of discussion. If adragon happens to spawn while you're in town and notices you over the walls then it'll start swooping over the buildings looking for people to burn. [–]Protoclown98 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago (0 children). There were CTDs occasionally in the wilderness, but they were fixed with SSME. But I personally don't use Open Cities. He doesn't outright say "if you don't like it, don't use it". Also due to the fact that I already lag in a few areas and I prefer NPCs that have quests affilliated with them to remain alive, despite the fact some quests aren't very good. We agree with and abide by that policy. Then again, people say lots of other mods are incompatible with lots of other mods without knowing that for themselves, so I guess I should not be surprised everyone seems to think OCS has to be run in isolation because of rumors. Version 0.3. About the only mod I can't use is a Breezehome mod like Elianora's (I went and looked while I was typing this and apparently there's a patch). All the ones I know of use their own population cells to spread the NPCs around evenly. Contribute to loot/skyrimse development by creating an account on GitHub. I as a roleplayer find it more usual to have Open Cities because it's more immersive, yet me as a gamer who played Skyrim many times I am very bored on how the vanilla Towns and Cities look. What this means is that - as a couple of people have alluded to - this allows things that happen to you outside the city to directly affect people inside the city. No offense to the creator, he did a great job (Arthmoor makes great mods, I do dislike his attitudes that he expresses towards users, though, but that's another topic), but there is likely no way possible to make something like Open Cities easily compatible with all the other mods out there. I have mods that add little items and fixtures to all the cities, and Open Cities would break all of em. However, it's still work that not all mod authors want to go through. Also nope. For instance, if you're approaching the outskirts of Whiterun and you attract that attention of a dragon, you might usually sprint for the gates and let the load screen despawn it. Please take your screen archery to. That's fine and I can get it to run smoothly with a fair few mods, but with all that effort from my system being used to run open cities I could run 20 other mods in its place which id enjoy more. it also depends on other mods for instance mods that alter npcs (for instance immersive citizens) open cities needs a lot of patches for that kind of mods. If you want to know the main advantages and disadvantages of SSE so you can decide what to play, here they are. With lots of NPC mods, I don't even notice a performance impact on a medium to low end rig. Personally, I love Open Cities. If you prefer heavily modded Cities with dozens of new NPCs and several new buildings, it's going to be a compatibility nightmare that you'll probably want to avoid. The thing that always bugged me about Open Cities was the way the city gates clipped into the tunnel ceiling at Riften. The added immersion and realism goes a long way, probably a lot more than you might think. Maintained by. I've just come to the realization I don't really care about player homes. I was editing my original reply probably as you were reading it, so I'll re-paste what I found on the IC mod/comments page: I have always used JKs and some of Arthmoor's mods with this and the problems are minor and not game breaking. I personally don't see it as much of an immersion killer to load a city when I walk in. A community curated list of 'essential mods. No other mods except the unofficial patch + Skse + crash fixes. While the seamless entry is nice I don't want to need rely on several patches. I wish more was compatible with the mod but what you gonna do? Clearly, as the comments here show, different people have varying priorities on what they want out of their game. I do agree with u/Arthmoor though that it was likely more lack of modding skills than actual incompatibilities. NPC mods and other sorts of stuff that add NPC's in exterior of Whiterun can still be accessed and do not require a patch. I've read quite often already that all of those mods (JK's Skyrim, Open Cities, Immersive Citizens, Immersive Patrols) are more or less essential for a good immersive play through.
